Rose Week at Altamont Gardens

Roses epitomise the height of summer, with its long balmy days brightened by their beautiful blossoms and nights filled with their delightfully heady scent. Altamont Gardens and Altamont Plant Sales host their annual Rose Week from Saturday 25th June – Saturday 2nd July 2016, welcoming visitors to one of Ireland’s most romantic gardens to celebrate the most romantic of flowers.

 

This event has been organised by the Office of Public Works in association with Altamont Plant Sales and Carlow Tourism to showcase the magnificent colour patterns and scents of their significant rose collection. The gardens boast an impressive array of rose varieties which include the always popular “Rosa Heritage”, “Rosa Just Joey”,Rosa Buffbeauty”, “Rosa Blush Noisette” and “Rosa Blessings”. All of the roses were tended to by Mrs. North, former owner of the gardens and are now carefully maintained by the team at Altamont Gardens.

 

The gardens are open daily from 9.30 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. with free admission for general viewing. A free talk takes place on Saturday 25th June at 12.30 p.m. in Altamont Plant Sales and will be conducted by John McNamara, rose grower and expert. On Wednesday, 29th June, Paul Cutler, Head Gardener at Altamont Garden will highlight Altamont’s magnificent rose collection whilst delivering specialist knowledge on the care and maintenance of roses. Tours cost €3 per person and advance booking of large groups is appreciated.

 

Treat yourself at Altamont Plant Sales, located on the site of Altamont Gardens, which features one of the largest collections of old shrub roses in the country and will have special rose offers available all week. Walled Garden Café serving delicious freshly roasted coffees, speciality teas and home made cakes open each day.
