A new edition to the Carlow Garden Festival for 2017 is Patthana Gardens which have been described by experts as one of the best small gardens in the country. Patthana is a small village garden set on many levels consisting of a lower courtyard area with a wildlife pond and upper garden consisting of mixed borders with many unusual plants. Join Jimi Blake, the noted Irish horticulturist, teacher and enthusiastic plantsman who owns the outstanding Huntingbrook Gardens in County Wicklow which contains one of Ireland’s largest private collections of plants.
If you are passionate about growing plants you cannot miss this wonderful tour where visitors will be amazed by the flamboyant perennials and striking foliage which create an opulent display of summer colour.
Jimi Blake trained in the National Botanic Gardens in Dublin as a horticulturist and was subsequently appointed Head Gardener at Airfield House in Dundrum, Dublin. There he resuscitated a large Victorian garden to its former glory enabling the public to rediscover and enjoy a lost gem.
After twelve years at Airfield, Jimi sought a new challenge and having secured twenty acres of the family estate he established “Hunting Brook Gardens.” He was now fulfilling his ambition of having his own garden, to grow and expand his plant collection and share his passion and knowledge with the public. He envisaged using his garden as a classroom and a showcase to demonstrate the diverse range of designs he could develop.
Jimi has realised his dream of a dynamic and innovative garden and continues to develop his vision in new directions, always pushing the boundaries outwards. Hunting Brook is a perennially popular educational space for students, volunteers, allotment holders and visitors and is now known as Ireland’s most exciting and fascinating garden.
Jimi is a gardening consultant, planting designer, and international lecturer giving talks and presentations all over the world.
Situated in Kiltegan village, Patthana is one of the best small secret gardens in the country. It is the garden of an artist, the painter T.J. Maher, and it shows. Standing outside the old granite house, one gets no indication at all of the magical courtyard garden that lies behind the wooden gates. There are so many distractions here. Each time one looks in a certain direction something unnoticed only a little while before becomes apparent. “Patthana is a garden I wish I had created.” – The 100 Best Gardens in Ireland by Shirley Lanigan.
